About us
Dr. Cherin is a native of the Tidewater area. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia and received a D.M.D. degree from Temple University in Philadelphia. He served as director of prosthetic services in the U.S. Air Force of the 851st Medical Group for three years prior to opening his practice in Virginia Beach in 1965.
Dr. Cherin has recently attained diplomate status in the American Board of Craniofacial Pain, which requires some 1000 additional hours of continuing education, passing of an extensive written exam, defense of three treated and documented cases by three examiners and the review of at least 500 treated cases. Dr. Cherin is continuing to search out new methods and knowledge in order to provide the best care for his patients.
Dr. Cherin is a member of the Tidewater Dental Association, Virginia State Dental Association, The American Dental Association, and the Academy of General Dentistry. He is a fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry which requires passing a comprehensive examination in general dentistry. He is also a fellow in the American Academy of Head Neck Pain and TMJ Orthopedics which also requires extensive examination procedures and more than 1,000 hours of continuing education in the TMJ area. He is a member of the American Equilibration Society and is a past president of the Greater Washington D.C. TMJ study group. He is on the staff of Sentara Bayside Hospital and Virginia Beach General Hospital. He is a member of the American Academy of Functional Orthodontics and is also a fellow in the Pierre Faurchard Academy, an honor dental society. He is also a diplomate in the American Academy of Pain Management, a group in which the majority of members are medical doctors and diplomate status is gained only by passing an exam in general medical pain management.
Dr. Cherin is also a member of the Sleep Disorders Dental Society and is a pioneer in the use of many types of dental appliances for use in sleep apnea and snoring and works with many area medical sleep centers with their patients. He is presently on the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Craniofacial Pain and is chairman of the committee on ethics and professional conduct. He is also associate editor of the journal of the Academy of Craniofacial Pain and is editor of the monthly newsletter for members.
Dr. Cherin's special interest and study for the past 20 years has been in the area of craniomandibular problems and bite relationships. He has lectured extensively to lay groups, study groups, at universities and with TMJ support groups. He has had extensive clinical experience in practicing in the TMJ area as well as more than 28 years of experience in practicing general dentistry. His goal is to successfully treat craniomandibular problems without use of prolonged drug therapy or surgery and to bring his patients into pain-free living.
